Wi-Fi Direct: what it is and how it works

Wi-Fi Direct links two Androids over the Wi-Fi radio with no router. See how it differs from hotspot, Bluetooth and KingFy OffChat.

Direct answer

Wi-Fi Direct lets two devices build a Wi-Fi link to each other with no access point. Venue internet does not need to exist. The feature only appears if the phone’s Android build offers that API and the permission is granted.

In KingFy OffChat, Wi-Fi Direct is an optional proximity layer: it extends what Bluetooth already covers when hardware and OS cooperate.

How to use it in product terms

Install KingFy, open offChat and keep Bluetooth on. If the system asks for Wi-Fi / nearby-device permission, grant it. The module uses Wi-Fi Direct when the device exposes that capability — you do not configure a router.

Test at home before an event or trail. If the neighbour list stays empty, check permission, distance and whether the other side also has offChat active.

Why it is not the same as Bluetooth

Wi-Fi Direct usually uses a radio with more throughput and, when the hardware helps, more range than classic Bluetooth. It is still a local link. Walls and distance still matter.

In offChat this layer appears when the Android device offers Wi-Fi Direct. Bluetooth remains available for nearby phones even when Direct is missing.

Do not confuse it with “turn on venue Wi-Fi”: Wi-Fi Direct does not depend on the mall or campsite SSID.

Limits and next steps

Without two compatible Androids and the same app, no protocol magic helps. Wi-Fi Direct does not deliver to another city without internet.

For multi-hop mesh, read the P2P mesh guide. To install the module, use the offChat Android setup guide.

Questions people also ask

Does Wi-Fi Direct need the internet?

No. The link is phone-to-phone over the Wi-Fi radio with no access point. Venue internet can be missing. The feature still only appears if Android offers the API and the permission is granted.

Is Wi-Fi Direct the same as a hotspot?

No. A hotspot usually shares one phone’s data connection with others. Wi-Fi Direct builds a Wi-Fi link between devices without needing that bridge to the carrier.

Does offChat use Wi-Fi Direct?

When the Android device offers Wi-Fi Direct, the KingFy OffChat module can use that layer in addition to Bluetooth. Not every Android exposes the feature the same way — that is why we say “when the device offers it”.
